Proper installation of front brake discs and pads is critical to vehicle safety. This guide outlines the standard technical procedure for European passenger vehicles.
1. Preparation and Safety
Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface, apply the parking brake, and raise the front of the vehicle using an approved jack. Secure with jack stands and remove the front wheels.
2. Caliper and Disc Removal
Loosen the brake caliper guide pins and slide the caliper off the mounting bracket. Use wire to suspend the caliper securely; never let it hang by the brake hose. Remove the caliper bracket, and unscrew the brake disc retaining screw to remove the old disc.
3. Cleaning and Mounting
Clean the wheel hub surface thoroughly using a wire brush to remove rust and debris. Apply a thin layer of anti-seize lubricant. Install the new brake disc and tighten the retaining screw. Clean the bracket and install new brake pads with anti-rattle clips.
4. Reassembly
Reinstall the caliper bracket and tighten the bolts to specified torque. Compress the caliper piston using a caliper tool, slide the caliper back into place, and tighten the guide pins. Remount wheels, lower the vehicle, and pump the brake pedal several times to establish proper pad-to-disc contact.
